Day 1-3
After an uneventful and rather pleasant flight, we ended up in Amsterdam passport hell where we stood in line for over an hour to get through passport control and our driver decided we were no shows so deserted us. A Viking representative from another tour rescued us by calling the office and they sent another driver for us. All in all an inauspicious start. We arrived at the ship before dinnertime....a most important point......and managed to stay awake until a reasonable bedtime.
We were off to Kinderdjik in the A.M so see the windmills and hear about the engineering feats of the Dutch in preventing the flooding of the lowlands. Actually, a quite impressive presentation and a nice walk despite the weather being cool and VERY windy. The hairdo (mine, not Dick's) attests to the windiness.
The rest of the day was spent sailing to reach the Rhine River meaning it was a laidback day for recovery from jet lag.
Today we toured Cologne, Germany. The highpoint is the cathedral but we also had an excellent walking tour through the area between the cathedral and the river.
Our guide talked about the rebellious nature of the people of Cologne. The clock on the town hall has a figure if a guy that sticks his tongue out on the hour and a statue of a disliked figure on the facade of the building is standing on buttocks.
(Unfortunately, my picture doesn't reveal buttocks so not included.)
After our tour we went to the Ludwig Museum, the modern art museum and enjoyed weird and crazy art. Then back to the ship for a lecture about Germany, a cocktail party and dinner.
